  12. WESTBORO, Mass., May 22, 1990 -- In a strong endorsement of
  13. MicrosoftR WindowsTM 3.0, Banyan Systems today affirmed its
  14. commitment to support the new product in the current VINESR Release
  15. 4.0, as well as in all future releases of VINES. Banyan had earlier
  16. been a beta test site for Windows 3.0, and VINES 4.0 is now
  17. shipping complete with Windows 3.0 support at no extra cost.

  19. According to David C. Mahoney, Banyan President and CEO, "By virtue
  20. of our longstanding, close relationship with Microsoft, Banyan was
  21. quick to appreciate the importance to the marketplace of a network-
  22. aware Windows 3.0 product that could be coupled with VINES to
  23. expand our 'window' into the corporate-wide PC network.  Banyan,
  24. our users and our resellers view today's Microsoft announcement
  25. with great enthusiasm and anticipation."

  36. By providing support for Windows 3.0 in VINES 4.0, Banyan enables
  37. users, operating within the Windows environment, to run both Banyan
  38. and third party applications simultaneously. All Banyan
  39. applications are capable of operating in the Windows environment.

  41. To support multiple, concurrently-running applications utilizing
  42. network resources, Banyan supports virtual machines under Windows-
  43. 386. This lets each active window (i.e., application) have equal
  44. access to the network resources which the user is mapped to upon
  45. network login. As a result, each application can have a different
  46. current drive or subdirectory.

  48. Windows 3.0 compatibility within VINES 4.0 also includes
  49. synchronous and asynchronous socket calls, as well as Interrupt 21
  50. calls. This means that any non-Windows applications written to
  51. Banyan DOS APIs will operate under Windows.

  53. VINES 4.0 users can install Windows 3.0 on their local hard disk or
  54. on a network drive. To utilize Windows with VINES, users first
  55. login to the network, and then invoke the Windows software. To run
  56. Windows, PC's require 2MB (minimum) to 4 MB of memory.
